Heliconia (Trailing) — Sunset

This artificial Heliconia comes in Sunset. Pointed bracts sit in tiers along the trailing stem, each opening away from the central line. The bracts carry sunset orange with warm yellow tones. Small hanging stamens sit beneath several bracts.

For a single stem, use a tall vase and let the trailing section fall over the rim. Turn the stem so the bracts open towards the main viewing side, with the tip hanging clear of the vase.

When using several stems, let some stems fall through the centre and guide others towards the sides. The repeated bracts build a fuller cascade and carry the Sunset colour from the vase opening to the lower edge of the arrangement.

Design notes:

A smoked graphite glass vase around 45 to 60 cm high places the orange bracts against a dark surface. A Japanese porcelain vase around 30 to 40 cm high provides a pale ceramic base. A hand turned walnut pedestal vase continues the warmth of the Sunset colour.

Pair Sunset with ivory, sand or biscuit. Apricot, tangerine and coral continue the warm colour range. Cobalt, teal and deep forest green provide stronger contrast.

Phalaenopsis orchids introduce wider open flowers through the cascade. Roses can sit closer to the vase to increase volume around the upper section. Iris adds a narrow upright line beside the falling bracts.
