Brunia Spray — Russet Brown Red

This artificial brunia spray comes in Russet Brown Red, a deep reddish brown. Slender branchlets spread upwards and outwards, ending in small oval seed heads with densely dotted surfaces. Rows of small raised markings run along the finer stems. The seed heads feel soft to the touch, and the stems can be bent to shape the spray.

For a single stem, use a small vase with a narrow opening and keep the lowest side branch above the rim. Bend the main stem so the fruiting section leans to one side, then turn it to show the gaps between the branchlets.

When grouping several stems, vary their heights and angles to create a wider spread. In a mixed arrangement, place the finer branches between different blooms, with a few tips extending past the outer flowers. The fine branching shape sits well among dense Australian native blooms or beside the broad faces of anthuriums.

Design notes

Ivory ceramic provides a pale base for the reddish brown spray. Clear glass leaves the curve of the lower stem on show, while dark olive glazed ceramic adds green beneath the fruiting branches.

Pair Russet Brown Red with cream, sandstone or taupe. Clay and cinnamon continue the red and brown tones, while aubergine adds dark purple. Celadon, slate blue and deep olive contrast with the reddish brown branches.

Place a Cream Yellow banksia at the centre, with brunia branches angled out around the flower head. For a more sculptural arrangement, group Burgundy Cherry anthuriums at different heights and let a few branch tips extend beyond their broad blooms. For a softer colour combination, place Soft Blue Violet hydrangeas at the base and Misty Pink cattleya orchids towards one side. Thread the brunia branches between them so the small textured seed heads sit beside the broader petals.
